Well enough of me... let me hear from you. :-)
Hi. I am 16 years old and I have sickle cell anemia. Throughout my childhood I wouldn't say that my disease has been really bad. However, I have had many of the symptoms on this site. As a younger child I did suffer through pain crises, and I also have had pneumonia two or three time in the past. My eyes also stay yellow (jaundice) all of the time. Sometimes my eyes are more yellow than other times. I remember one time in the 5th grade my eyes were yellow and the D.A.R.E. teacher was teaching us about drugs and how your eyes can turn yellow from it. When the teacher said that a girl named Samantha looked at me in a weird way... I guess she assumed that I was on drugs. It's pretty funny now that I think about it but at the time I was offended. Anyway, as a child I would visit my doctors in Greenville, NC every six months for a check up. By the time I got to the fifth grade I didn't have many pain crises and I did not get as sick as much. However, I night I woke up to get something to drink in the middle of the night. Well when I tried to get up my right leg wasn't moving... I figured it was just asleep. When I finally got up I fell down on the floor, the loud thud woke up my brother and he helped me get up. I realized that my leg was paralyzed and after being examined by my doctors and taking many different tests including X-Rays and MRI's we figured out that I had a silent stroke. There was a lack of oxygen in the left side of my brain so I stayed in the hospital receiving blood transfusions. After three days I was back walking and my life returned to normal. The only thing different is that every since the 5th grade, I have been receiving a blood transfusion every month to prevent the incident from occurring again. At first my doctors said I would only receive them for a year, but after that year he figured that I should keep getting them to be on the safe side.
Well enough of me... let me hear from you. :-)

AuthorI am in the 11th grade and I created this website as a part of my North Carolina Graduation Project. I chose to do it on sickle cell anemia and making the public aware of it because I have it and I feel that people should know about it. I hope you learn a lot from my site and I also would like one favor...SPREAD THE WORD. People need to know about this, maybe one day you'll have a son, daughter, niece, nephew, etc. with this disease and you will need to be AWARE. |
